On January 6 in Newport News, Virginia, Richneck Elementary School suffered a horrific tragedy when an unidentified student shot his first-grade teacher, Abby Zwerner. Police officials have confirmed that the shooting was a result of an intense confrontation between the child and Zwerner.
Reports have been released speculating if the student had previously been verbally threatening Zwerner’s life. According to Insider, the student had previously said he wanted to light her on fire and watch her die. Proceeding a still ongoing investigation, police officials have confirmed that the shooting was premeditated and intentional.
Zwerner is said to be in stable condition despite the shooting resulting in life-threatening injuries. One of many statements reported by officials claimed the bullet went through her hand and into her chest.
Due to the student’s age, Virginia law does not allow minors to be tried as adults. In addition, the student is far too young to be placed in the Department of Juvenile Justice if found guilty. The child is currently being held with the Department of Child Protective Services.
Since the incident, superintendent George Parker III released a statement that children within the Newport News school district have received lessons involving gun violence and how guns can disrupt not only an educational environment but communities as well.
