One of our favorite friends has passed on, and could we BE any more upset? Matthew Perry, who is most known for his role as Chandler Bing in the world famous sitcom, Friends, sadly passed away on October 28, 2023.
His hilarious character, Chandler, was known for his witty one liners, and jokes. Chandler was a huge tv icon, and truly made us all laugh and smile. As a die hard Friends fan myself, I know we will all miss him.
His co-stars on Friends, whom he worked with for more than 10 years, had many kind words to say about him. Well known actress, Jenifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green, payed her tribute in an instagram post, where she wrote, “Oh boy this one has cut deep … Having to say goodbye to our Matty has been an insane wave of emotions that I've never experienced before…”
Matt Leblanc, who played Joey Tribianni, Chandler's best friend, and roommate in Friends said, “The times we had together are honestly among the favorite times of my life. It was an honor to share the stage with you and to call you my friend.”
Although Matthew Perry was mostly known for his days in the spotlight, he had some intense substance issues in the past that he had to overcome. He wrote a memoir called Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing, which was based on his journey with drugs and alcohol.
This impacted his life greatly and caused him to have many health issues in the past. However, as the memoir describes, his issues didn’t ruin his life, rather they turned him into the caring and giving human being that he was.
"The best thing about me, bar none, is if somebody comes up to me and says: ‘I can’t stop drinking. Can you help me?’ I can say yes and follow up and do it," (Matthew Perry from an interview on the podcast “Q with Tom Power”).
Perry also turned his mansion in Malibu into a sober living house. In 2013 he received the Champion of Recovery award from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Matthew Perry was an amazing person, definitely one to remember and keep in our hearts forever.
