The new dog respiratory illness, also known as canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), is a contagious respiratory infection that affects dogs. It is caused by a combination of viruses and bacteria, including canine influenza virus, parainfluenza virus, and Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria.
The classic sign of this illness is a frequent honking cough that comes on suddenly. This cough can also be described as gagging or retching, and usually a froth comes out of the mouth. The cough generally worsens with exercise or moderate activity, which irritates the airways.
Symptoms of this illness can vary, but commonly include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and lethargy. It's important to remember that CIRDC can spread easily in environments where dogs come into close contact with each other. This includes dog parks, boarding facilities, training classes, and the groomer.
In most cases, the illness is mild and dogs will generally fully recover in 7 to 10 days. However, it all depends on the infecting organism and the dog’s ability to fight them.
For treatment, there are no special drugs for dogs with CIRDC, but with rest and basic supportive care the dog will recover quickly. This means letting your dog rest and keeping them hydrated. A dog that suffers more serious symptoms may benefit from non steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications and fluids.
All veterinarians recommend keeping your dog up to date on vaccinations, practicing hygiene, and avoiding exposing your dog to potentially infected animals. If you suspect that your dog may have CIRDC, it's best to consult with a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.
