On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, President Joe Biden delivered the State of the Union address. Although many Republicans were left unsatisfied, the address started off well, with many Democrats cheering and applauding many of his points.

However, once certain topics were brought up, the speech was consistently interrupted by outbursts from Republicans over issues on immigration, the border, Medicare, and Social Security. These outbursts included booing and shouting on and off throughout the address. Although others often replied with shushing and calls for order, nothing was able to end the interruptions.

President Biden was even called a “liar!” by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and others even simply yelled “no!” in response to any ideas they disagreed with. However, he was able to get most Republicans to agree that Social Security and Medicare will be protected, as many even stood and cheered.

Biden appealed to bipartisanship in his address, speaking on how he wants to work together with Republicans, instead of working against them. However, he refuses to compromise on most topics, like how he wants Republicans to cave on their demands for spending cuts so Congress can raise the debt limit. He also focused on issues impacting middle America, and called for police reform and continued support for Ukraine.

The speech was a preview of a very likely run for reelection. Although he faces clear discontent from Republicans, surprisingly many Democrats seemingly aren’t thrilled with the idea of his reelection either. Many still believe he hasn’t done much since the beginning of his four years. But things could change if his ideas during the speech are implemented and supported by the majority, as they showed a clear direction for the rest of his term.
