On March 10, 2025, “X” - the social media platform previously known as “Twitter” - was targeted by a series of media outages. Its creator, Elon Musk, blamed the outages on the platform being hacked and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
Musk took to “X” angrily, explaining the initial assumed cause of the outages was a coordinated group of great size and even went as far as to say the perpetrators could be an entire country. A few hours after the outages, a pro-Palestinian hacker group called Dark Storm Team took credit for the attack, but Musk went on to say that the attack had originated from a Ukrainian IP address.
Five attacks against “X”, all with different lengths, occurred during the day of the outages and lasted from the early morning to late afternoon. The main disruption for users was not being able to log onto the app and use it, but “X” has since taken measures to secure their servers to prevent more attacks of this degree.
Although the true identity and objective of the culprits are unknown, more information is still coming to light in the wake of the attack, and definitive conclusions will be made as more details are available.
