Only a few weeks ago, it seemed like the popular social media app TikTok was facing its last days.
President Joe Biden along with the administration urged that the company should be sold or the app banned from usage within the United States. With so many lawmakers attacking TikTok for potentially stealing data and being unsafe, the community is defending itself by stating that it is used for entertainment purposes and could be used as an educational platform.
These bans may consist of blocking all economic transactions by the app, which will cut off app store listings, data storage, and server access. These changes would force TikTok to immediately decline which will inevitably eliminate it.
Taking away such an influential app can be viewed as both a negative and a positive. Educational videos and content that benefits the viewers won't be around anymore. Many use Tiktok as a source of news, or help for school. With so many other tragedies and important events happening around the globe, people are wondering how an app can have such a large impact.
As Hailey Johnson ‘25 stated, ”TikTok could be used in very positive ways for bringing light to important topics ranging from politics to societal awareness.”
Many influencers on this app have made careers out of posting and have expressed their concern for the app possibly being banned. Viewers have expressed their disappointment or glee in the situation as well.
Montana is currently on route to being the first state to go through with the ban. There is already legislation stating that the ban on TikTok will be implemented on all personal devices. The bill which was voted on by a margin of 54-43 still needs to be signed by the governor.
A spokesperson for TikTok has spoken up about fighting for their users, ”We will continue to fight for TikTok users and creators in Montana whose livelihoods and First Amendment rights are threatened.”
Only time will tell if the end for the top charting app is to come.
