Jingling Through Time: A Festive Journey Unveiling Christmas Trends Across the Years

Demetra Polito '24

Christmastime is here and various holiday trends have changed over the years. Trends may come and go but they always leave something memorable behind. There are several Christmas customs from various decades since the 1900s, that gained popularity before either fading away or evolving into something that is being observed today.

1910: Christmas Tree Lights

In the 1910s, this new convenience, electric lights, gained popularity, creating more design options. By doing away with the traditional method of lighting trees—candles—Christmas lights significantly decreased the likelihood of a tree fire.

1930: Cookies & Milk

A straightforward but self-sacrificing custom was born in the 1930s as the Great Depression had an impact on the country's economy. When most people were going through hard financial circumstances, families showed their gratitude and appreciation by leaving a dish of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa. It became a tradition, and Santa (as well as parents!) are very appreciative of the gift.

1960: The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker Ballet had been performed by the Russian ballet for decades. In the 1960s though, its popularity in the US skyrocketed. In 1944, The Nutcracker was performed on stage at the San Francisco Ballet company, but it wasn't until roughly fifteen years later that it became a Christmas mainstay in the United States.

1980: Ugly Sweaters

The 1980s are where most great ugly sweaters originated. They shone with an enormous selection of Christmas characters and designs. Every millennial's dream is to uncover a real ugly sweater from the 1980s, and sometimes the best treasures come from raiding your parent’s current closet!

2000: Elf on the Shelf

Love them or hate them, the Elf on the Shelf has been a household fixture in the United States since the 2000s. The mischievous elf, who is generally up to no good himself, serves as a visible reminder of what not to do until Santa arrives on Christmas, encouraging the children to be good for Santa.

No matter your favorite Christmas tradition through the decade, all of them may be somewhere in your house!! Be sure to look extra close for the magic hidden inside these classic traditions.
