New York Looking for a “Rat Czar”

Hannah Taiwo ‘25

New Yorkers are tired of seeing rats everywhere they walk, which is why the Adams administration posted a new job listing for a Director of Rodent Migration, a “rat czar.” This person will help clear the city of all its rodent problems.

With the salary listed between $120,000 and $170,000, it’ll be a hard opportunity to turn down for some New Yorkers. Over the years there's been an excessive amount of rats in the city. New York City has become known for this, and it's now time to put an end to the Big Apple’s rat problem. Although some find this job listing ridiculous, and believe NYC should be working on fixing other things like homelessness and being focused on actual humans and not rats, getting rid of these rodents is also necessary for our rat-infested city.

Although this job does have good pay, you need to have a college degree in order to even qualify for the job. This will be a hard task since rats are very smart and resourceful. They have already been able to survive efforts under former Mayor Bill de Blasio who focused more on trash pickups, better housing inspections in targeted neighborhoods, and using dry ice to suffocate their hiding spots so they wouldn't be able to go in or out.

Being resourceful, rats end up living in places that we would never go to, making it hard to solve this rat issue. One of the ways the “rat czar’’ is going to reduce the number of rats is by limiting the number of hours trash can sit on the curb before it’s picked up, which will be great since rats feed on the garbage being left to pick up. No food equals no survival.

There are roughly 2 million rats who call New York City their city as well. It is important that we don't let these rodents win and take over because rats can cause many infectious diseases like leptospirosis.
