NYC Finally Hires The First Ever ‘Rat Czar’

Rosa Palumbo '25

Mayor Adams hires NYC rat czar after a months-long search. Kathleen Corradi has been named the city’s director of rodent migration.

“Her goal will be to build a cleaner, more welcoming city and tackle ‘public enemy number one'... Kathy has the knowledge, drive, experience, and energy to send rats packing and create a cleaner, more welcoming city for all New Yorkers," Adams said. "The rats are going to hate Kathy, but we're excited to have her leading this important effort."

Kathy Corradi was chosen out of 900 applicants for this position. She has worked in the education department since November 2015.

She has a background in anti-rat initiatives. In elementary school she took part in getting rid of the rats in her neighborhood. Ever since then she has been cracking down on rats in schools.

Mayor Adams announced the new Harlem Rat Migration Zone and put in a $3.5 million dollar investment dedicated to reducing the spread of rats across Harlem.

These new investments, dedicated to the reduction of the spread of rats, will cover several Community Boards, such as 28 NYCHA properties, 73 NYC Park locations, nearly 70 DOE schools, and over 10,000 private properties.

The city’s sanitation department has recently announced an anti-rat measure to limit the amount of time trash bags sit on curbs. This was a big measure that was introduced to spur rat reduction in NYC.

I got the opportunity to ask a few students how they feel about the rat situation in NYC.

Fontbonne Sophomore Alexa Abano states “I’m glad the rat situation is getting taken care of considering the rat surge recently, and mostly because I hate rats.”

Fontbonne Senior Annalisa Castrogiovanni states “I would hate being the rat-czar because I hate rats.”
