Queen Elizabeth II’s Death

Kayla Clayton '23

On February 6, 1942, Elizabeth II was coronated Queen of England. She was only 25 at the time. Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years. She was loved by many in the UK, and even loved by many all around the world. When Queen Elizabeth passed on September 8, 2022, she was 96 years old.

The entire world was shocked to hear the news. The cause of her death was because of old age. Days leading up to her death, she was sick and in the hospital. She passed away in Balmoral Castle in London, UK. She was laid to rest in Windsor Castle’s King George VI Memorial Chapel in the Royal Vault.

Charles, son of Queen Elizabeth and the new King, issued a statement after his mother’s death, saying, “During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.” All of the UK is upset over this tragedy. People are laying flowers by Buckingham Palace where she used to live, and the nation has been brought closer together because of this.

While the majority of London is mourning the loss of their queen, others do not feel upset about this. Three-quarters of Britons (76%) say they were upset at the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, including half who said they were “very” (22%) or “fairly” (25%) upset. One in five (22%) say they weren't upset at all.

With that being said, our hope for England is that King Charles will do all that he can to serve his nation and to keep the memory of Queen Elizabeth II alive.

“It is through this lens of history that we should view the conflicts of today, and so give us hope for tomorrow.” - Queen Elizabeth II
