On Wednesday, November 6th, Southern California experienced a rapid wildfire breakout, damaging homes and evacuating residents, according to officials. Within the same week, at least six wildfires erupted on the other side of the country–in New Jersey. The fires were fueled by dry brush, low humidity, and high winds.
Driven by what fire officials described as a “strong Santa Ana wind storm,” the Mountain Fire in Ventura, California, spread to over 14,000 acres. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the fire started around 8:51 a.m. local time. “Firefighters were right off the bat engaged in pulling people out of their houses and saving lives,” Ventura County Fire Capt. Trevor Johnson said.
Passaic County is home to two of New Jersey’s big wildfires: the “Cannonball 3 Wildfire” in Pompton Lakes and the “Jennings Creek Wildfire” in West Milford. As of November 9th, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service reports that the Pompton Lakes fire was 50% contained and covered 164 acres. The West Milford wildfire spread over 3,000 acres and was 10% contained as of 7 pm on Sunday, November 10.
Firefighters and emergency services continue to work tirelessly to contain the wildfires and protect lives and property. Residents in impacted areas are asked to follow evacuation orders and stay updated.
