A shooting in Monterey Park, California, on January 21 killed at least 10 people and injured 10 others. The shooting took place near a Lunar New Year festival celebration. Huu Can Tran, 72, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting. When police attempted to apprehend him, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Seven people remain hospitalized. County Sheriff Robert Luna expresses gratitude to two courageous community members who were able to disarm Tran before things escalated further. Many lives were saved as a result of their heroic actions. According to the Gun Violence Archive, this is the 36th mass shooting in 2023. It is the country's deadliest mass shooting since the Uvalde massacre in 2022.
