Fontbonne offers many clubs and sports teams, however what about the possibility of expanding and offering more clubs? Students have been hoping for new clubs such as a dance club , a roller skating club, or even a gymnastics club, however, it has been argued that these other clubs are unsafe. Any type of sport has its unsafe factor, but with the right coach or moderator, any student can enjoy these sports in a safe and enjoyable way. If the problem is safety, let's look at it this way: Basketball actually has the highest injury rate out of any sport. So, we can have Basketball but not a simple dance club?
Another conflict that has occurred over this topic is whether or not these new sports would be competitive or not, and the answer to this is simple. Having these clubs competitive would be great, but they don't have to be. Students aren't asking for a dance team or roller skating team, they are asking for a dance CLUB and roller skating CLUB. Meaning, these possible sport additions could be non-competitive and just remain a fun after school activity.
Budget, time, and location are also issues. Things like dance and gymnastics can be done in the gym before or even after cheer practice. However, with things like roller skating, we would need to use a different location. Yes, this would mean the club would need a budget. In order to get this budget for these new clubs, the school (or the students) could host fundraisers and events to raise money in order to support and start up these clubs.
¨I don't do any clubs, but this would be the one that I would join because dance is my life,¨ Freshman Nino Kolhelly says about having a dance club at FHA. ¨A gymnastics club would be a great club to have a Fontbonne because a lot of the girls know how to tumble and that's great help for Sports Night¨ Freshman Noah Sarmiento tells me about her thoughts on a gymnastics club.
Many of these clubs could bring new students to gain more interest in afterschool events and even help prepare for Sports Night. Though some may be harder than others to make possible, we can still try our best to find a way to incorporate these activities into the students's lives.
