Three people have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Liam Payne, a former member of the iconic One Direction boy band.
The 31-year-old singer fell from the balcony of a Buenos Aires hotel room on October 16, 2024.
Those convicted include a suspected drug dealer, a hotel employee who allegedly gave Liam Payne cocaine at least twice during his time there, and an unnamed individual who was close to the singer, the Argentine authorities said.
According to National Public Radio, prosecutor Andres Madrea charged the three suspects with the crimes of “abandonment of a person followed by death” and “supplying and facilitating the use of narcotics,” said the prosecutor.
Toxicology reports revealed that the last 72 hours before he died, Payne consumed cocaine, alcohol, and a prescription antidepressant drug, according to the prosecutor’s office. The prosecutor’s statement did not mention “pink cocaine,” which ABC News had reported he consumed before his death.
According to the BBC, “medical reports suggest that Payne may have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.”
The prosecutor’s office believes that this evidence eliminates the possibility of a conscious or voluntary act by the singer, and they have decided that Payne was unaware of what he was doing and did not have any comprehension of his actions.
Payne’s body was flown back to the UK to his family on November 6.
Following the death of the beloved singer, thousands of mourning fans paid tribute to Payne at memorial events around the world.
