Will New York's Race For Governor be a close call?

Giavanna Torchio '25

Our two gubernatorial candidates, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin, have been going at it all summer, but as the election date November 8th is quickly approaching, things are beginning to heat up, and the two candidates are neck and neck in the polls.

Governor Hochul was originally in the lead according to sources. In fact, she was up about 18% from her contender. However, now many polls say they are almost 50-50 in votes, with Hochul having a slight edge.

Both candidates have completely opposing ideas. Governor Kathy Hochul has already come up with many new ideas if she wins. Beginning with an attempt to make the subways safer by adding 1200 new NYPD officers into the train stations, Hochul also wants to add congestion pricing, where you would have to pay a toll of as much as $23 to go over all bridges going into Manhattan. She is also pro no-cash bail law.

Meanwhile, Lee Zeldin has nearly opposite ideas. He is against no-cash bail law and congestion pricing. Zeldin is also seen as more strongly supporting law enforcement, having been endorsed by all law enforcement agencies across New York state. A large part of Zeldin’s campaign is based on reducing crime in New york. It was actually reported that a drive-by shooting occurred right past his house just this month.

So far in the city, it's been 59% for Hochul and 39% for Zeldin, while upstate Zeldin has 52% support while Hochul has 44%.
