“There are many stories of chivalry where the heroic knight saves the damsel in distress. This is not one of them,” Millie Bobby Brown states in the beginning of her new movie Damsel.
The whole idea of the movie is to break away from a typical fairy tale. Instead of the knight and shining armor saving the damsel, he's the one she needs saving from. The movie follows Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown’s character) and her journey to escape a fire breathing dragon.
It starts when she is set up with a young prince. Her family isn’t so well off, and needs the money to survive. She gets married to him, and is excited for her brand new life when her new husband, Prince Henry (Nick Robinson’s character), throws her into a dark cave.
She quickly realizes that this is a matter of life or death. There is a dragon in the massive cave that is eager to torch anyone of royal blood. If she wants to survive, she can't depend on anyone else, only herself.
The movie started out strong. It was exciting and fun, but as you got to the middle things started to slow down. It started to go in circles, and felt as though it was rushed. You don’t get much out of the setting since the whole movie takes place in the same, basic cave. Overall, it was a generally good movie.
It was suspenseful, and left you guessing until the end. There were definitely some shocking twists and turns including when another character came into the cave, although this did not make up for the repetition of the movie.
I would recommend it for the good plot twist, and themes of sisterly love. While there were a few things that could be better, it was still very entertaining.
