Academy Awards Honors Yeoh, Fraser, and Avoids Controversy

The 2023 95th Academy Awards was a big success this year. There were some sixteen first time nominees. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel hosted, making very discrete remarks about the Will Smith slap that happened last year, while not mentioning his name. Kimmel even said that the Academy instituted a crisis team that was ready to make sure that nothing got out of hand. Luckily there was no violence or drama this time.

The big winner was Everything Everywhere All At Once with Michelle Yeoh starring. The movie won awards for best actress in a leading role, supporting actor and actress, best original screenplay, best picture and best directing categories. Michelle Yeoh made history as she was the first Asian woman to win the best actress Academy award.

“This is proof that dream big, and dreams do come true,” she said in her acceptance speech, adding “Ladies, don’t let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime, never give up.” Yeoh dedicated her big win to her mom and all the moms everywhere saying “they are really the superheroes.”

Another big winner was The Whale, with Brendon Fraser in the leading role. He took home the award for best actor. Fraser thanked the Academy and the studio for making a “bold film,” and he also thanked director Darren Aronofsky for throwing him a lifeline role. He then thanked his fellow nominees, saying: “It is an honor to be named beside you in this category.”

These are just two of the movies that were given an award. Of course, other movies, actors and actresses received well-deserved awards. For example, Top Gun: Maverick won the Academy Award for best sound.

Although Michelle Yeoh’s Everything Everywhere All At Once was the biggest winner, it’s safe to say that all the other nominees put a lot of effort into their well-made performances and productions.
