In 2019, a retired optometrist, Terry Sanderson sued Gwyneth Paltrow for a ski accident back in February 2016, where the both of them collided while skiing a beginner-level slope at the Deer Valley Resort. Sanderson originally filed for $3.1 million but the judge ruled that he can only sue for $300,000. Paltrow’s countersuit is for $1 and attorney fees.

At the time of the lawsuit, Paltrow denied the allegations in the suit and told People Magazine: “This lawsuit is completely without merit. Anyone who reads the facts will realize that.” She also claims that Sanderson is at fault for the accident and was actually the one who hit her. She says that he is trying to “exploit her celebrity and wealth.” Paltrow also claims that Sanderson’s injuries are exaggerated.

On March 21, 2023, both lawyers’ opening statements explained how both participants are at fault for the accident. However, Paltrow’s lawyer claims that while Paltrow was skiing, she saw "two skis appear between her skis and a man comes up right behind her," indicating that she thought she was being assaulted.

Paltrow said, "I was skiing and two skis came between my skis, forcing my legs apart, and then there was a body pressing against me and there was a very strange grunting noise. My brain was trying to make sense of what was happening… I thought, is this a practical joke? Is someone doing something perverted? My mind was going very, very quickly and my mind was trying to ascertain what happened."

Gwyneth Paltrow’s lawyer opened up the case by revealing that Sanderson emailed his daughter the same day of the crash saying, “I’m famous” to which his daughter replied, “I can’t believe it was caught on the GoPro.”

After a couple of days of the trial, the court was shown screenshots of a conversation over text: "I came in. That guy sort of hurt me. I'm going to get a massage at 3.” Paltrow’s conversation with her son Moses was sent at 2:29, suggesting that she came in early because she had been hurt.

As of publication, the court has yet to make a ruling.
