AJR’s newest release, “I’m a Mess,” received more backlash than any of their other songs. But, this is not in the way you would expect.
AJR is an American indie pop band made up of three brothers: Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met. They are best known for their song “I’m Ready.” The AJR brother’s style features musical instruments warped with electronic music to create a unique sound.
Their new single, “I’m a Mess,” was hinted at in multiple teasers and an instagram post with the caption, “Spent Last night blowing up my life.” It turns out that caption became a significant part of their new song’s chorus.
We asked around Fontbonne Hall Academy to see what students thought of the new release. Molly Fox, grade 10, said, “I think this specific song is really relatable especially in high school when you’re trying to figure out who you are and it really emphasizes how it feels after focusing on one specific decision you made and accepting it. I think it really captures the feeling of accepting that life is unpredictable.”
After getting many fans' hopes up, their reactions to the song were surprisingly mixed. Albumoftheyear.org showed that out of 341 people who rated AJR’s new release out of 100%, the average rating was 50%. Many expressed disappointment calling it unlistenable, while others praised, it expressing excitement for their possible new album drop.
This is just a snippet of what is to come for AJR, as they also dropped a sample of their upcoming album, “The Maybe Man,” expected to be released on November 10th. Mark your calendars and get ready!
