An Unforgettable Run

Isabella Belfiore '26

On November 5, 2023, a wonderful tradition that we know as the TCS New York Marathon was held. Runners that participate in this marathon follow a 26.2 mile route, and this year, about 48,574 runners took part in this fantastic event!

The TCS New York Marathon is an infamous event that many strive to work up to and is seen as an ultimate goal for many runners. Those that met time standards from NYRR races in 2022 were able to engage in the 2023 marathon. This marathon installs excitement and anxiousness in all taking part in it.

Fred Lebow, the co-founder of the New York Marathon states, “Why do people run the marathon? Most of us won’t perform on a stage. But whether a person is a world-class athlete or a four-hour runner, the marathon gives us a stage, where we perform and be proud, while millions of people applaud.” Overall, this is a great annual tradition and people from all over come and take place in the race.

The race started at 8:00 am, and the very last wave of runners began at 11:30 am. The course was open for all runners to have the opportunity to cross the finish line until 4:00 pm.

Tamirat Tola, an Ethiopian runner, was the winner in the men's division with a time of 2:04:58. This was the first marathon Tola had ever won and it was a great victory for him. Helen Obiri, a runner from Kenya, was victorious in the women's division with a time of 2:27:23. While Tola ran solo for the last 6 miles, Obiri was constantly fighting for the lead with Letesenbet Gidey and Sharon Lokedi.

The TCS New York Marathon is a great event that runners look forward to every year. Completing this marathon is a goal numerous runners worked towards and was used as training for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The 2023 marathon was a complete success and brought a sensation of excitement to the city.
