In the 1940s, it was considered normal for all women to have their legs covered, but this isn’t the 40s. This is 2023. Girls shouldn’t be forced to wear tights under their skirts.
Now that it's winter, Fontbonne students have to transition to the winter uniform, which includes tights under their skirts. Some people like the tights because of the cold weather outside, but others don’t.
Tights can be restrictive and uncomfortable for some girls. Everyone has different bodies and different preferences for comfort. Some people might like tights, and if they do, then they should wear them. However, if someone isn’t comfortable wearing tights, they shouldn’t be forced.
Other than weather, there is no reason to wear tights. It isn’t about looks, because in the fall and spring girls don’t have to wear them. As for the weather, if a girl is comfortable going out without something under her skirt, she should be able to.
Gabrielle Apisa ‘27 stated, “I think that, as independent women, we should have the CHOICE to wear tights or to not. Personally, I’m always freezing so I need them. But other people might find them uncomfortable and I think that needs to be respected.”
Tights should be a choice, not a requirement, and the girls’ comfort should come first. If they don’t feel comfortable wearing them, and think they can tolerate the weather, it's their choice. They should have the right to that choice.
