It's that time of year again, so put up those lights and get decorating! At least, that's what many of the residents in Dyker Heights have been doing since the 80s. However, many have begun to notice the tour bus chaos.
When Tour buses first started to pop up around Dyker, it wasn't causing that much disturbance, but now it's getting worse. Tessa Lomoro '26 says, ¨The tour buses have recently become big in my area. Many times I will have to take a longer route back to my house because the normal route would take even longer. What would have taken me 10 minutes to get back home might have taken me 20 during Christmas time. Many also find parking (if they don't have a garage) frustrating because of all the other cars and buses. I love this time of year and that my neighborhood takes Christmas to another level, but for many residents, this can be frustrating.”
The tour buses aren't just causing a disturbance to this beloved Christmas tradition, but it's also making it harder for the many residents that live in Dyker Heights. Alyssa Minnuci ‘27 says, ¨When the buses are there, these people get out of the buses holding light sticks and won't let you cross until their whole group goes or they will just be double parked in the street so even if you're driving you won't be able to see the house. They cause you to wait there for hours!"
Minnuci told me this when I asked her about the havoc the buses cause. These tour buses are adding to the already crowded area of Dyker during Christmas, making it hard to drive or even walk anywhere. From personal experience, I noticed how hard it was to even drive on the main roads that don't even have many homes with lights!
The buses are clearly impacting many people. Some might be so annoyed by the buses that they may even stop going to Dyker for Christmas! Dyker is a major Christmas attraction, however, many companies are taking advantage of the people who work so hard on their houses just so they can make extra money touring people around.
Living In Dyker has become much more difficult because of these buses. I have even noticed that less and less people are decorating this year. Could this be because of the buses? Many may even avoid decorating just because they don´t want these buses in their area.
The buses are causing traffic, fewer people visiting Dyker, and even fewer people decorating their homes. So, will you still be going to Dyker this year to see the lights or will you pass because of these buses?
