Christmas: The Season That Keeps on Giving

Linda Diaz '24

Is Christmas overrated? An interesting question for such a special holiday. Before we answer the question, we should first know what Christmas is all about. By textbook definition, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a cultural and religious celebration all over the world. Although the holiday celebrates Jesus Christ, it also celebrates many other things. From Santa Claus to the Little Elf on the Shelf, Christmas has an array of traditions and customs. From what I gather, Christmas is the holiday you spend time and money with and on your family, friends, and loved ones. On the morning of December 25, people can remember the exciting feeling of getting presents, followed by a huge dinner with the family. But is that all Christmas is?

Nope. Christmas is way more than that. Christmas is the whole season. When the winter season starts, some people consider it to be the beginning of Christmas, the season can even start directly after Thanksgiving. Some people consider the Christmas season’s start directly after Halloween. It is a time of period when families become closer, friends get excited, and students get ready for the winter break. People become cheery and happy around this time, unless you’re Ebenezer Scrooge. It is known as the happiest time of the year!

Christmas is just composed of so many different varieties. The Christmas tree, stockings, presents, the fireplace, and Michael Bublé are all key components of the Christmas season. To finally end the debate of when the Christmas season should be celebrated is…the day before Thanksgiving. Hear me out on this one folks. On the day of Thanksgiving, people are already in the holiday cheer where they become closer and share that good feeling all around. On that day, families already begin helping each other with the preparation of the Thanksgiving dinner. At the dinner table, what music do you play? Christmas music.

The day before Thanksgiving gives people the opportunity to get into the groove of helping each other and the feeling of happiness. It is also the day people should put up Christmas decorations as that is also a family and friend bonding experience. Christmas is not just about the one day on December 25. It is about the happiness, love, and unity everyone feels in the lovely season.

Finally, it is time to answer the question: Is Christmas overrated?

The answer is no.

Christmas is the happiest time of the year! It has so many elements that it spreads its magic over 12 days and then some. Sure, maybe hearing Mariah Carey’s high notes on repeat twenty times might get a bit overdone, but you can’t lie and say it is not one of the best Christmas songs. So overall, Christmas is great, spend time with family, and enjoy the winter break!
