On February 24, 2023, Gracie Abrams released her debut studio album Good Riddance. The gut-wrenching album features Abrams' soothing vocals accompanied by Aaron Dessner's fantastic production quality, which leaves listeners emotional.
While Good Riddance may be Gracie Abrams' first studio album, she has been putting out music since 2019. Her first single, "Mean It" was released in 2019, and it set the scene for Abram's vibes for the rest of her releases.
Soon after, Abrams released her first EP, Minor, which features songs like "I miss you, I'm sorry" and "21," which is my personal favorite. Following that, Abrams released This Is What It Feels Like in 2021, which resembles her work in Good Riddance the most as they both have similar sounds.
Good Riddance is currently the album captivating a larger audience. With recent trends of TikTok blowing up songs and spreading them to a larger audience, Gracie Abrams' song "I know it won't work" from her latest album started trending. People began creating dances, recording covers of the songs, and even posting their relatable experiences with the song in the background.
Fontbonne student and TikTok singer Allie Hinz '23 expressed, "I absolutely adore this album. The first song I fell in love with from Gracie Abrams was her single 'Block Me Out.' This album has given me so many more songs to sing and record for my TikTok, and I absolutely love how emotional the album is. My current favorite song from her new album is 'The Blue.'"
Gracie Abrams starts off Good Riddance with her song "Best." This song details admitting guilt in how a relationship ended and acknowledging your mistreatment of someone. The bridge of "Best" will honestly have you throw your phone across the room due to the complete angst and anger it depicts.
The album's second and probably most popular track is "I know it won't work." This song expresses how even though you might love someone and may have a hard time leaving them, you sometimes must ultimately realize that you are not meant to be together.
Skipping around to a more fast-paced song on the album: "Where do we go now?" is about feeling hopeless after being left and unable to understand where the relationship has come to now. It’s another stand-out from the album.
I only highlighted a few songs from this wonderful album. I 10/10 recommend listening to this album fully front-to-back to receive the full experience. If you like to be in touch with your emotions and want your music to make you feel something, Gracie Abrams is the right artist for you, and you'll love her debut album Good Riddance.
