Harry Styles' Love on Tour has Become the New Fashion Week

Anita Perez '24

British singer Harry Styles started his second solo tour, Love on Tour, in September, and since then both Styles and fans alike have been serving nothing but flamboyant looks at his concerts. From Styles’s sequined shirts and suspenders to the fans’ full-on banana suits, your typical concert is now your typical fashion show. So far, Styles has performed in what is becoming his signature concert look: a glittery vest or shirt paired with suspenders and high-waisted, flared pants. Designed by Gucci and styled by Harry Lambert, every one of his tour looks are adored by fans and even other celebrities. Not only is he surprising fans every time he steps on stage, he is also making huge statements about gender roles. Giana Capialbi ‘24 says, “I love how no matter what he wears, it’s never boring. His personality really shines through what he wears, and it’s rare to see that with men in Hollywood.” Ever since starting his solo career, Styles has been breaking common gender norms. In the December 2020 issue of Vogue, he made history as the first solo male cover wearing a custom Gucci gown. This caused a lot of controversies, but Styles doubled down on his belief that society shouldn’t tell you how to express yourself and your gender. His ornate and feminine fashion sense inspires others to step outside the box, too. “Through Harry’s different tour outfits, he reinforces the statement that we should all be ourselves no matter what others think of us and no matter what society deems is right,” says Cassie Bunnell ‘22. Fans love to see Styles constantly challenging society with his stylistic choices, even when he’s on stage. He isn’t the only one dressing to impress, however. Fans themselves are arriving at his shows in clothes just as extravagant as his. Some fans take their outfits very seriously and even custom make them, but other fans choose to have a little bit of fun with it. One fan went viral after showing up in a banana costume, while others are dressing up in flared pants and boas. Jenine Samara ‘22 explains, “I think it’s been an expression of creativity. From personal experience, I can say that the atmosphere of the concert was very inclusive. This probably made the audience feel comfortable in their very unique fashion choices.” Love on Tour started only a month ago, but the tour’s impact on both the music and fashion industries is becoming more prominent with each show. The way the fans and Styles take your average concert and turn it into such an inclusive environment is inspiring to so many people. This tour is not only providing an outlet for people’s creativity, but it’s also changing the way we look at concerts from now on.
