On October 29th, Henry Cavill posted on Instagram that his time as Geralt the Witcher in the Netflix show The Witcher is ending.
With the show in its second season and the third and fourth seasons confirmed on the same post, fans are unhappy that Henry is leaving the show. The person that will be taking over his place is Liam Hemsworth, who has acted in movies such as The Hunger Games and The Last Song. Henry has announced that his last season on the show will be season three, which plans to be released in the summer of 2023; from then on, Liam will be taking over.
On the same day as Henry's post, Liam made a post on his Instagram saying, "Henry, I've been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I'm truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world." In his comments section Liam has many unhappy fans telling him not to take the role, with one fan saying, "No one can replace Geralt. This role is made for Henry Cavill and Henry Cavill only." Even with many haters and heartbroken fans in Liam's comment section, he is still excited to take on this new role and hopes to win all of The Witcher fan's hearts.
Many fans have wondered why this change has arisen so suddenly, even with the show being popular and successful. One fan said in Henry's Instagram comments, "For those who do not know: it is most likely because of the script deviating from books… He stated at the beginning that the show has to follow the book. Sadly Hollywood does what Hollywood wants. The Witcher will die as you depart, Henry." At the same time, others believe that it is due to Henry being a movie star due to his famous role as Superman, causing Netflix to be unable to afford him.
Fontbonne senior and fan of the show Gabriella Tolve opined, "He's such a staple of the show, and him leaving could be equivalent to Ellen Pompeo leaving Grey’s [Anatomy]. He's been such a rock for the show, and it's going to be weird to watch the show without him in it."
As a fan of Henry Cavill, not just for his work as Geralt in The Witcher but also for his work as Superman, which he will also not be returning to, it is heartbreaking to watch such a talented actor go. His fans, including myself, wish Henry luck on any of his new endeavors and hope that someday he will return as Geralt.
