On March 31, Disney released a new original movie on the platform Disney+ called Prom Pact after its premiere on Disney Channel the night before. This movie had mixed reviews, with most viewers loving it for bringing back feel-good Disney originals and others deeming it "too inappropriate" for the platform.
The movie is about the main character Mandy Yang trying to get into her dream school, Harvard, by any means necessary. Her dreams are crushed when Harvard waitlists her application. However, she has a plan to get into the school anyway by using one of the most popular kids in school, Graham Lansing, whose father is a Harvard alum.
She offers to tutor him in his worst subject, AP Psychology, and their relationship grows into something more romantic. Shortly after, this is followed by heartbreak since she used him for his father's recommendation into Harvard.
However, the controversy in the movie is surrounded by Mandy Yang's best friend, Ben Plunkett, whose name is "No Nuts Plunkett," which itself is a sexual innuendo. The character Ben is working in the supermarket when an underclassman from his high school, Kyle, walks in and questions him about his love life.
Kyle asks him if he's ever hooked up with a girl, and when Ben says he has kissed a girl before, Kyles says, "Kissed? Ugh. Are you 9? I'm talking about your P in a V." This line isn't very on-brand for Disney Channel as it seems to have been targeted at older audiences. Many people on TikTok were shocked. Commenter cnfessional said, "MY JAW HIT THE FLOOR!! I said 'in a disney channel movie?!?'" [sic]
Although there is some controversy about this movie, most viewers absolutely love the feeling of old Disney Channel original movies making a comeback. Gabby Tolve, '23, said, "For me, Prom Pact was really refreshing. The movie reminded me a lot of old Disney.
For a while now, newer Disney Channel shows and movies have kind of been lacking in so many areas. Prom Pact seems to be a sort of hope that Disney is going back to their roots and giving us quality stories again."
I hope Disney continues to make movies like this because many other viewers and I loved the nostalgic feel and wholesome love story this movie brought. Even though there were some questionable lines, it's the parent's responsibility to check a film's rating to ensure that it is appropriate for their child. Since this movie is rated 14+, I see no issue with Disney Channel promoting and releasing this movie.
