The 81st Golden Globe Awards, hosted by comedian Jo Koy, received mixed responses from the audience. Koy's opening monologue, in particular, was criticized for its inappropriate and insensitive jokes, with many people calling it sexist and distasteful.
During his introduction of the movies, Koy talks about Oppenheimer being a movie based on a 7000-page novel and then going on to ridicule Barbie, calling it a movie about a plastic doll with "big boobs." The audience didn't appreciate Koy's humor, and it didn't take long for people to express their displeasure on social media.
Koy also went on to insult Margot Robbie, the lead character in Barbie, insinuating that she was nothing more than a pretty face. He joked that “the critical moment in the movie was when Barbie went from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet, which casting directors refer to as a "character actor." This joke fell flat, and Koy was quick to defend himself by saying he "only got the gig ten days ago."
Despite Koy's inappropriate and misogynistic jokes, the film industry has continued recognizing the talent behind the movies. America Ferrera, one of the lead actresses in Barbie, won an Oscar, while the movie received eight other nominations. As for Koy, it's safe to say he won't be hosting any awards shows anytime soon.
