Kendrick Lamar gave a shocking performance at the 57th NFL Super Bowl halftime show. He made numerous historical references while also sharing the stage with the sensational R&B artist SZA for a few songs. Lamar used cryptic messages throughout the performance, leading to a range of interpretations.

The performance began with Uncle Sam saying, “This is the Great American game.” This is a reference to the literal game played on the field and the games played in the American political system. The stage was also set to depict a video game, making this line fitting.

He made another historical reference by saying, “40 acres and a mule, this is bigger than the music.” This takes listeners back to the post-Civil War era, leaving a lingering message through his songs.

The crowd roared when Kendrick Lamar and SZA sang their fan favorites, “Luther” and “All the Stars.” These two are a dynamic duo and left all viewers mesmerized with their spectacular performance together.

Many questioned if Kendrick Lamar would play his controversial, award-winning song “Not Like Us.” He did not disappoint his fans and went out with a bang with this hit. This song is a direct diss on the artist Drake, and many questioned if Lamar would call him out during the performance. He did just that—staring directly into the camera while doing it!

Serena Williams—who also happens to be Drake’s ex-girlfriend—made a surprise appearance in this year's halftime show, dancing along to Kendrick Lamar’s hits.

Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 halftime performance was full of surprises. He reminded football fans, “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date.”
