NY Football Teams: What Went Wrong?

Victoria Palumbo '24

Here we are, another football season is underway. Our home teams, though, the New York Jets and the New York Giants, are disappointing us already.

As of today, the New York Jets have a record of 3 wins, 3 losses, and are in 3rd place. Our other home team, the New York Giants, are not as lucky. They have a record of 2 wins, 5 losses, and are in 4th place. Come on teams – lets get it started!

What is going on? Both the New York Giants and Jets weren’t off to a great start this football season. The expectations for both of these teams were very high, but what happened?

For the Jets, it started with Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers, the star quarterback of the New York Jets, only played for a fraction of the time, and that is why it all went downhill. He sustained an injury to his Achilles tendon, so he could possibly be out for the rest of the season.

Aaron Rodgers claimed that he would be back again to play for the Jets, but is he unsure that it will happen this season. Elisavet Kammas ‘26, commented on the situation, “knowing his age he was bound to leave, but if he is able to make a full recovery it would be great.”

I also interviewed Julie DiCapua ‘24, on her opinion about Aaron Rodgers, “Rodgers's injury isn't something that he could bounce back from so quickly. It's an injury that he would need to take seriously in order to have a chance to play again. He will need time to recover and get back to 100%, so I don't think he'll be getting much time on the field this season.”

Even with Aaron Rodgers’ injury, the New York Jets have a good backup quarterback in Zack Wilson. So far, he is doing a decent job which is critical to keeping the Jets moving forward. Injuries have plagued the Jets consistently this season to such players as Sauce Gardner (CB), DJ Reed (CB), Bradin Echols (CB), and Michael Clemons (DL).

The Giants have also been plagued with injuries to players such as Daniel Jones (QB), Saquon Barkley (RB), Eric Gray (RB), John Michael Schmitz (OL), and Adoree Jackson (CB). With a neck injury to Daniel Jones sustained during game 6 against the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Tyrod Johnson has been able to lead the Giants to a win over the Washington Commanders.

Hopefully both of these teams make a big comeback and rack up wins!
