Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter Squash their Beef

Gianna Franzese '28

The 2025 Grammys set the stage for a major reunion between one of the two most popular pop singers: Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter. The two singers haven't publically interacted with each other since July 2020, almost 5 years ago!

The two were spotted hugging and giggling with each other during the awards show. Rodrigo and Carpenter appeared to be having a conversation that must have made them laugh, maybe a nice catch-up on how things were going. There’s no way to know for sure though!

If there's one thing that could break the internet, it would be a Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo collab. However, the thought of that could have only been just a dream, considering the fact that Sabrina and Olivia have tension over both of their ex…Joshua Bassett.

Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter had known each other through Disney Channel. Rodrigo shared that she enjoyed seeing Carpenter perform and just loved her as a person. But once 2020 hit, this friendship started to change.

Rodrigo and Basset were supposedly a thing back in 2020, after filming together on High School Musical The Musical The Series, but in June of 2020 Basset was seen with Carpenter at a Black Lives Matter protest in LA, and later in October the two were wearing matching Halloween costumes in a TikTok video.

Of course, following these events, Rodrigo wrote her hit song “Drivers License.” Rodrigo's song hinted at this rumor of Basset playing both girls being true, causing the drama to start to stir up.

Many interviews have gone on ever since “Driver's License” was released. In one specific interview, when asked if the rumor about the hit song was about her, Carpenter replied: “It's really not my place to say. I think a lot of people were sorta pointing fingers….” Carpenter also added, “The only way I ever know how to deal with things is to write about it.”

Carpenter released “Because I Like A Boy” in 2022 as a response song to “Drivers License”, which was most likely about Basset. Looking back on what had happened could hopefully become just a laughing matter to Rodrigo and Carpenter.

Though no public announcement has come out about the two being over what happened back in 2020, fans of both artists are buzzing over this interaction, hoping for the two of them to collaborate in the future!

The internet hasn't stopped since the video of them together came out. Hopefully, this friendship is heading in the right direction!
