Retire, Play, Repeat? The Tom Brady Story

Caitrina Mullally ‘25

After 23 years Tom Brady is finally stepping off the field…or is he? Last year Tom Brady was supposedly retiring at age 44. As we all know, he later reversed that decision, coming back to try to earn his eighth championship ring. Some might say in making this decision he left his family behind, since he and his wife Giselle separated. “That man literally chose football over his family,” says NFL World. Everyone’s question just one year later is if Brady is being honest with us this time.

At age 22, Brady was drafted by the Patriots as a quarterback. He won seven Super Bowl titles with the Patriots. In 2001, he started for the first time because of an injured player and the rest is history. He became the Patriots’ prized possession.

In 2020 Brady was traded, and now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback. CBS said, “Tom Brady is following the path of fellow legendary quarterbacks like Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre and is leaving the team he will be most recognized with.” This shows reasoning as to why Tom Brady would want to be traded. Brady stated at the time, "To all my teammates, coaches, executives and staff, Coach Belichick, RKK and the Kraft family and the entire organization, I want to say thank you for the past twenty years of my life and the daily commitment to winning and creating a winning culture built on great values. I am grateful for all that you have taught me - I have learned from everyone.” Brady did not leave the Patriots on bad terms.

He signed a one-year, guaranteed $15,000,000 contract with the Buccaneers.

After all of these steps to become accomplished in his own eyes and the public eye, Brady is stepping down at 45. ESPN reported, “First he made a 6 a.m. phone call to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers notifying them of his plans. Then he posted a tearful video on social media two hours later.”

People still questioned the legitimacy of this retirement. Brady also said, "Good morning, guys. I'll get to the point right away. I'm retiring. For good.” This statement seems to be reassuring to NFL and Brady fans. Is this it for the player who many considered to be the “GOAT?”
