Rihanna's Iconic Return to the Music Industry at the Super Bowl

Kayla Clayton '23

For those who are living under a rock and don’t know who Rihanna is, she is a music artist who thrived in the early 2010s and then stopped making music in 2016 to focus on her makeup brand Fenty Beauty and other important things in her life. Since then, she had a beautiful baby boy, launched Fenty x Puma & Savage x Fenty, as well as so many other things. There was no talk of when she was returning to music or if she was going to even make an album again.

On November 11, 2023, the new Black Panther movie came out and we got to hear a new song sung by Rihanna that was featured on the soundtrack. For the first time in seven years, we got blessed with the announcement of her performing at the 57th Super Bowl. When the world found out about this, they went crazy: so many people from every generation were so excited for this because it has been so long since she was on the stage.

There was a lot of talk and anticipation about how she would perform. Everyone was quite eager to see what she had in store. She did something at the beginning of the show that I don't believe many viewers saw. She basically hinted slightly that she was expecting without actually saying so.

Her performance on television made me feel as though I was there in person. She sang most of her hits like “Work,” “Wild Thoughts,” “Where Have You Been?” “Only Girl In The World,” and many more. Her all-red outfit looked fantastic. Every song that she sang had the crowd going crazy.

The dancers were excellent, and what most astounded me was that they were literally floating in the air on a platform without any safety equipment to keep them from falling. She appeared to be accompanied by between 60 and 100 dancers on the field. They were all wearing white slacks and big white coats. They all danced beautifully and looked amazing.

There was a part of the show where she touched up her makeup using a product from her brand, and I thought that was such an iconic move. Because of TikTok, that part of the choreography from her performance blew up. It’s all I see on my TikTok feed - like at this point I already know the dance without even learning it.

The last song she performed was her song “Diamonds,” and it showed her in the air wearing a long red coat that touched the floor while the whole arena held their flashlights up. Her expression of gratitude and the overall appearance of the situation suggested that she missed performing.

When asked what their favorite part of the show was, Natalie DiCapua ‘23 said, “My favorite part of the performance would probably be when she sang on the floating platform.” Right now, we know that she’s more focused on taking care of her baby boy that she gave birth to in May, and trying to get through this second pregnancy without any complications. I'm sure that all of her fans can't wait to find out what else she has planned for the future.
