Saying goodbye to Disney’s Splash Mountain ride

Julianna Bambina '24

Disney recently announced the closing of it’s 30 year old ride, Splash Mountain. This news was heartbreaking to Disney fans. However, they are looking forward to its reopening when it has been redesigned.

Disney made this decision because the ride includes several characters from Disney's 1946 film "Song of the South," which features racist stereotypes. Although the ride is currently closed, Disney shared that Splash Mountain would be “reimagined” as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, based on the movie “The Princess and the Frog," which was released in 2009. The main character, Princess Tiana, is Disney’s first Black princess. Many people’s favorite ride, Splash Mountain will be reopened in late 2024, but with this “Princess and the Frog” theme.

Karen Louie, a Sophmore in Fontbonne, commented, “I have been on the Splash Mountain ride in Magic Kingdom. I am interested to see the new attraction and can't wait to go on the ride. This is exciting news and I am looking forward to seeing what new things Disney has to bring to the table.”

Various other students in the school have this same reaction to hearing the news, and eagerly anticipate this revamping of a beloved ride.
