The Met Gala, which takes place on the first Monday of May, is an annual fundraiser held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It is often referred to as the most prestigious and most important night in fashion and design. Every year the event raises over seven figures and attracts huge media attention.
This year's gala will present two hundred and fifty historically significant pieces. These pieces are too delicate and fragile to ever be worn again. They were all designed and made by famous and influential designers. Of these two hundred and fifty pieces, an Elizabethan bodice made by the House of Worth in 1877 is the oldest and most precious.
This year's Met Gala theme is “Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion”. The dresses that have been deemed too delicate are the sleeping beauties of the show. The show will honor beautiful and classic fashion pieces. Natural resources and materials have been used for thousands of years in inspiring and creating design.
Another smaller theme of the gala is appreciation for sustainability in fashion and gratitude for nature. The exhibition will have three major sections, land, sea, and sky. These three sections represent the material within it to design and create the garments. For this year’s show, the Met will also incorporate the use of video animation, soundscaping, CGI, and artificial intelligence.
