As we all know, the beloved app TikTok might be getting banned for good. On January 18th at 9 p.m., the app went dark, leaving millions of the app's viewers in shock. The app remained inaccessible until the next day when Congress passed a law giving the app three more months to find a new buyer.
Although TikTok is a safe space and an income for many, the U.S. government feels that the app is collecting information, such as names, addresses, and bank account information.
The Ceo of TikTok Tok Shou Zi Chew has expressed his deep feelings for his app and hopes there is some way to save the app. He stated, “TikTok is meant to make others feel happy, it was never meant to be in the hands of the Chinese government." Chew expresses his feelings here and has sympathy for many Americans who have made a living off of the app.
He is currently working with the United States government to keep the app up and running, but that can all change quickly. Rumors of a TikTok ban have been circulating for over 5 years now, yet no one has ever done anything about it till the app went dark. Many were shocked and wanted answers. The CEO and Congress have gone through many trials, though no answers have been reached.
As the debate intensifies, some suggest TikTok could avoid a full ban by restructuring its U.S. operations or selling off its American assets to an American company. This would address security concerns while keeping the app accessible to millions of users.
TikTok’s fate is undecided but many people think the app will stick around. For now, the only thing its users can do is hope they end up selling to America and getting back the app they love for good.
