On November 19, our JV and Varsity cheer teams had their first competition of the season. Both teams completed their own individual traditional routines and their combined routine for game day.
The cheer team's first competition took place in Trenton, NJ at the Cure Arena. The girls were there from 7am to 7pm competing in a total of three routines. Kylie Powers ‘24 shared that she had a good time and enjoyed watching the other teams.
“It was a very long day but in the end I had a lot of fun being able to watch the other teams and see new skills.” Kylie is a main base on varsity. “Being on the mat is one of the most surreal experiences. Once you’re on the mat you have 2 minutes to do your absolute best routine.”
Both of our cheer teams received a bid for their game day routine, making this the third year in a row going to Nationals. Sara Oliveri ‘24, also on varsity, filled us in on what Nationals is all about. “Nationals is what every cheerleader looks forward to. You get to travel to Florida with your team and compete in front of some of the best teams in the state. You get to go to the parks, room with your friends, and compete at ESPN Wide World of Sports. Some of my favorite memories from cheer were made this past year in Florida. I’m very excited to go again.”
Our JV girls shared what they felt as well. Luciana Marino ‘24 is on JV and is a backspot. She is currently out with an injury but was still able to partake in our routine. “Being on the mat again was great and I enjoy all the time that I get to spend with my team.”
Flyer Francesca Surace ‘25 said, “Flying is scary in the moment but once you step out on that mat you get the biggest adrenaline rush. There’s no better feeling than having all your stunts hit perfectly. When you fly you get to take in the crowd and perform for them, which is my favorite part.”
Congratulations to both our cheer teams on receiving their bid to Nationals and good luck to the teams for the rest of their upcoming season.
