A Look at the Outfits at King Charles’s Coronation

Efstasia Karahalios '24

On May 6, 2023 King Charles III (the former Prince of Wales) was crowned as King of the United Kingdom. Though the title he now holds as King comes with great responsibility, many all over the world tuned in to see the fashion worn by those in attendance. This is a personal review on the outfits worn by a handful of celebrities that I believe make worst dressed and best dressed lists.

The top three celebrities that have coined the title of worst dressed are Janja Silva, Samantha Cameron and Jill Biden. Janja Silva (Photo #1) is wearing a custom Neriage rustic orange dress with a matching long overthrow. The outfit itself is extremely boring for such a classy event: the monochrome color itself is boring but there are no accessories present such as bags or jewelry to make the outfit more memorable. This is a look that has nothing special about it and could be found anywhere.

Next is Samantha Cameron wearing Cefinn: the dress itself lays at an awkward length along with sleeves that have too much fringe for such a floral dress. The hat and scarf are an obnoxiously loud color for a dress that already has such a busy pattern. The hat covers half her face, but is so beyond flat that it almost doesn't even look like a hat at all.

Lastly Dr. Jill Biden (Photo #3) wore Ralph Lauren. The bow seems like a random addition, and though the monochrome and beauty of the periwinkle itself is appreciated, it is a color that is not the best for her skin tone, washing her out. The cut of the vest appears suffocating and contradicts the overall fall of the top.

Moving on to the top three best dressed at the coronation of King Charles: Katy Perry, Queen Letizia of Spain, and Sophie Trudeau. Katy Perry (Photo #1) wore a lavender Vivienne Westwood skirt, matching blazer top, accompanied with a mesh lavender hat and gloves. This outfit was so fun and entertaining while also being appropriate for a royal event. The monochrome was done beautifully in a way that the color wasn't overwhelming but evenly distributed among the clothing and accessories. She is also one of the few celebrities to incorporate jewelry and a cool bag into her look.

Next is Queen Letizia of Spain (Photo #2). Wearing Carolina Herrera, she wore a bright pink skirt, matching embroidered top and a dome hat with pink accents. The sling back shoe is a favorite among the fashion community because it has a classy, fun accent. Her outfit overall is a fun color with basic materials and gorgeous embroidery. The outfit is tasteful without being overwhelming.

Lastly, my personal favorite is Sophie Trudeau (Photo #3). wearing Ted Baker. The beautiful mauve color is chic and classy. It is extremely elegant and simple, and she paired it with nude shoes, a gorgeous frilled hat and a tasteful bag with 3D accents.

King Charles’s coronation was a historical event that brought many celebrities wearing fun and elegant outfits fit for the occasion.
