As college football proved in an overwhelming fashion on January 9th, underdogs are not always the victors.
The Georgia Bulldogs, who finished the season undefeated, seemingly bullied their opponents off the gridiron. Becoming the first team to repeat back-to-back College Football Playoff championships, the red wave crashed over the Horned Frogs.
Although many backed the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs, Georgia’s star quarterback, Stetson Bennett, eliminated any hope for Texas.
In the first half alone, Bennett threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores. The strong start from Georgia seemingly set the tone for the rest of the night, as TCU never recovered.
Other Bulldogs, such as tight-end Brock Bowers and receiver Ladd McConkey, secured Georgia’s overall yards and touchdown completions. Furthermore, the defensive line of the Bulldogs had little to deal with from their opponents, as they were simply too well-coached and too talented to handle.
In what was a night to remember for Bennett, especially in his last game for Georgia as a 25-year-old, much was still to be said about Max Duggan, fellow quarterback from TCU.
Duggan, who had been the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, looked off-balance during the championship game, throwing two interceptions in the first half alone. As a quarterback many deemed as having great potential, he surely led his team to one of the most embarrassing finals in recent sports history.
With a final score of 65-7, Georgia stood on top of the collegiate game once again. With the right players and coach at their helm, Georgia is set to remain a stronghold in college football for years to come.
“Last year’s team probably had more talent on it,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart stated. “But this year’s team was different, like they had this eye of the tiger. They were not going to lose.”
