As I was watching this second part of the first “requel,” I was pleasantly surprised as I found myself enjoying this film more than Scream V. While Scream V wasn’t terrible, Scream VI did everything it didn’t do, and better.
Following the terrifying events of 2022 in Woodsboro, California, sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) have moved to Manhattan where Tara is attending college with her friends/fellow survivors Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown). With a new setting comes new characters and new blood-curling plotlines, and it was all executed greatly.
The film wasn’t trying to be something it wasn’t. It wasn’t forcing itself to be an exact replica of every other Scream movie we’ve seen before. It didn’t force those same old cheesy plotlines into the story but incorporated refreshingly new characters and plotlines. It became a new film in itself, while simultaneously diving back into the roots of what a true Scream movie is.
The film contained a perfect balance of nostalgia along with refreshingly new differences that allowed it to be the perfect balance of old and new. One of the most obvious is that there is no designated final girl for us to root for. This time, there’s a core four. It's refreshing to actually see a solid group of friends that can share the experience and try to help each other get through the terrifying events.
Despite our ultimate final girl, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) unfortunately not returning, the film did well on its own. Taking place after the previous film, it was already an entirely new story, despite its similarities. It didn’t need any of the originals to keep it entertaining. While I was looking forward to seeing her reprise her role once again, it was interesting to see more time spent on the new main characters.
The film effortlessly brings back that nostalgic horror that made the Scream franchise what it is. It is a perfect “requel” for all the Scream lovers and a great film for those just getting into horror.
