Jacob DeGrom Leaves the Mets, Signs with the Rangers

Carly Intrabartolo '25

It is true, Jacob DeGrom has thrown his last pitch as a New York Met. After being with them for nine years, winning two Cy Young Awards, DeGrom accepted a five-year contract with the Texas Rangers for $158 million.

According to SNY's Andy Martino, the Mets found out DeGrom was far down the road with the Rangers about an hour before the deal was announced. This indicates that the Mets were surprised that the decision was made so quickly, and that they did not have the chance to match Texas’s offer.

Fans' reactions to the news included disappointment, but some do see it as a good thing instead. Some believe that DeGrom leaving the Mets, gives them a chance to sign fresh other players who will bring more to the table then DeGrom was able to, because to his injuries. In fact, the Mets have completely re-imagined their starting rotation, signing reining AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, lefty Jose Quintana, and Japanese phenom Kodai Senga.

Considering the amount of games DeGrom has missed in the past due to his injuries, people believed the Mets were just wasting money on him. Although this may be true, DeGrom is an a fan favorite player, and those fans are upset about his decision to leave.

Well-known New York fan Donovan Mitchell was definitely disappointed. When asked about his thoughts on DeGrom leaving, Mitchell stated, “Probably gonna give him a call and cuss him out or something.”

Although there are mixed feelings from the fans about this news, the Mets will hopefully strive without him rather than suffer. Being in a different league, the Texas Rangers continue to pose no threat to the Mets even if they now have DeGrom on their team. Therefore, let’s hope the Mets have a good season this year.
