Mean Girls has been a beloved and iconic movie since its release in April of 2004. Starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert, internationally, the movie earned 129 million dollars, and a reputation of a witty and classic movie.
The Broadway musical adaptation of Mean Girls, was released in October 2017, and has remained a success. Mean Girls, a musical movie, has been set to be released in January of 2024, nearly twenty years after the original arrived in theaters.
The announcement was immediately given a mixed reaction. Tina Fey, the creator of both the original and the Broadway show, was reportedly excited to pit the musical on the big screen - an opinion not largely shared.
While the cast may be talented, other components were not so well received or appreciated. The costume choices were deemed cheap and without the iconic flair of the original. Additionally, confusion surrounded the release of the trailer, as it left viewers unclear if the movie really was a musical. All in all, many believe the movie is lackluster and won't carry the reputation of its predecessor from 2004.
All of this leads many to wonder, “Is this movie necessary?" Considering the success of the original musical and movie, there's no doubt it will attract a crowd of attention. The cast will provide its own additional support.
Will this musical movie leave behind a positive legacy? Even with unappealing fashion, a confusing trailer, and a load of criticism, the movie still has a chance to stun us all. It should be given a chance - as a full movie (not just a two minute trailer) - before we all deem it as either one of the industries less successful endeavors, or as a loved addition to a classic movie.
