Nutritional Literacy Club’s Beginning Again

By: Francesca Surace ‘25

As the 2022-2023 school year started up again, so did many clubs, specifically the Nutritional Literacy Club. The club's moderator, Mrs. Brussi introduced this club last year with the intention of teaching the girls at Fontbonne about their nutrition along with the value of their diet and health. This club seemed to interest many of our students from all grades, considering healthy eating habits and well-being are a vital aspect in many teenage girls' lives.

The club had its first meeting of the year on November 7 to just give a general overview of the future of the club. The club members heard from the co-founders and co-presidents of the club, Alesia Azinedari ‘23, Gianna Repole ‘23, and Sofia Giudice ‘23 about the steps the club would be taking moving forward and what they have planned.

“Future events will include finding a chef to come teach us about nutrition and cook different foods from different cultures. We are working on doing either a gingerbread house or sugar cookie decorating for Christmas,” senior Gianna Repole announced.

These are opportunities for the student to have fun, but also promote and incorporate the new tips and tricks that the club recommends. Having the ability to talk and learn from a real chef can be beneficial and hopefully improve or influence a change in Fontbonne’s nutrition.

Nutritional Literacy held another, more informational, meeting November 13 where they played a YouTube video talking about a popular plant-based diet called the Mediterranean Diet. The video included the benefits of the diet and what it consisted of. After watching the video, the club members were required to answer a Google Form containing questions about what they learned and how they can use this knowledge to their advantage.

As the club progresses, many see it as a positive part of the school, “Students are learning to be more aware of what they are putting into their bodies and formulate a more balanced diet,” expresses Toni-Marie Fichter ‘25.

Nutritional Literacy has and will proceed to be an influential club at Fontbonne as the club continues to improve its outreach and enhance its role with the girls here at Fontbonne Hall Academy.
