Real Gold or Fool’s Gold: Golden Globes Outfit Reviews

Samantha Soued '24

The Golden Globes came back to Americans’ screens on January 7, 2024. The controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the group of journalists that founded and ran the Golden Globes until 2023) dissolved due to backlash because of their lack of Black representation and overall corruption (taking bribery from directors). Now the Golden Globe Award Ceremony is run by Dick Clark Productions. But anyway, let’s discuss something a lot more lighthearted.

Personally, I did not watch the Golden Globes, but I did watch Youtuber MacDoesIt’s fashion review of the outfits worn at the Golden Globes. Who wouldn’t want to see what these dazzling celebrities decided to strut? This review is all in good fun - no hate! Let’s discuss six of the most notable outfits on this year’s runway. Which were golden and which were just fool’s gold?

Taylor Swift has had quite the year. She was named Time Magazine’s 2023 Person of the Year. She stimulated the economy with her ERAs tour and the accompanying movie. She brought more Swifties to football games. This shining emerald green dress, although lacking in accessories, is some REAL GOLD. It is a very unique piece and eye-catching as well. I’m here for it.

Lily Gladstone had an amazing Golden Globes night, winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her iconic work in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” She has made strides in the Indigenous acting community, being the first Indigenous woman to win the award. Part of her speech was communicated in the Blackfeet language, which is the Native community that she is a part of. Her accessories honor her Indigenous roots, and I am loving this dress. It’s a very unique piece worn by an incredible woman. I say REAL GOLD!

Timothée Chalamet, I was expecting more. I wanted that Willy Wonka extravagance, but we got this instead. Yes, his face was flawless, but that’s not enough for the Golden Globes. At least there were sparkles. A top hat would have been nice. I did not want to do this to Timmy, but this is FOOL’S GOLD. I’m sorry! Can we leave black monochromatic suits in the past?

Lenny Kravitz received a nomination for his original song “Road to Freedom.” But can we talk about this outfit? Scratch what I said about monochromatic suits because this is how it’s done. This is a complete serve, with the shades, the cut-outs on the side, the pointed shoes. I’m loving this a lot. This is clearly some REAL GOLD.

Erika Alexander was nominated for her role in the movie “American Fiction.” This was a bold move: colorful patterns were not the norm at this year’s Golden Globe. I am here for it. Her multicolored hair is gorgeous. I am not the biggest fan of mermaid style dresses, but this one fits her well. The color scheme is perfection. This is REAL GOLD. I don’t know how anybody could disagree. It’s fun, accessorized, and very unique. Loving it!

Keri Russell was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama TV Series for her role in “The Diplomat.” She is gorgeous, but that dress is not my personal favorite. The first thing that came to mind is a bunch of shredded paper. She could have added some color to the outfit with her bag, but that didn’t happen. I have to say, it’s FOOL’S GOLD. The chunky necklace does not flow well with the neckline of the dress. I think that the eye makeup looks really good on her - I’ll give her that!

There are so many more iconic outfits worn by well-loved celebrities, but here were a few, along with my unwarranted review. Hope you enjoyed reading!
