The Addams Family Is Back and Better Than Ever: Wednesday Review

Victoria Spagnuolo ‘25

Netflix’s new hit Wednesday is the streaming service’s No. 3 most popular show of all time, according to the company's watch-time stats. It generated over 1 billion hours watched in the first 19 days since its release.

According to Variety, Wednesday is now one of the most viewed shows in Netflix history, netting 752.5 hours of watch time since its debut.

The series follows a teenage Wednesday Addams after she is expelled from her high school and is sent to Nevermore Academy. Nevermore is a school for all kinds of outcasts — from werewolves, witches, and sirens, to homicidal maniacs like Wednesday. There, she embarks on a path of mystery, love, and solving murders.

Seeing the iconic character of Wednesday Addams return in a modern-day show of her being a teenager could have gone one of two ways. As revivals are becoming more and more commonplace, it is more apparent that revivals are not as good as the originals — and we should stop making them for every old franchise.

However, Wednesday did not disappoint. The plot was interesting and great. The series by itself was amazing.

Jenna Ortega’s performance alone was outstanding. Taking on an already-done character in a franchise that has been done and loved before is extremely challenging. Ortega nailed embodying the “classic” Wednesday glare and attitude, along with how she would act as a teenager.

The series brought a well-needed revival to an iconic series and even more iconic character.
