The Point’s Player: Breezy Basketball Star Maddy Siegrist Picked Third Overall in WNBA Draft

Shannon Wasson '23

Maddy Siegrist has been quite the talk of Breezy Point in recent weeks.

Little over a week ago, the Villanova Women’s Basketball forward was selected third overall by the Dallas Wings in the 2023 WNBA Draft. With a background in Breezy Point and a known family name, Siegrist’s recruitment has brought a sense of pride to most town goers.

In her most recent collegiate season, Siegrist led her division in scoring 1,081 points, which was only 28 points away from breaking the record total.

A known force on the court, Siegrist leads her teammates with an offensive mindset. In her final season for the Wildcats, Siegrist averaged 24.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. Her all-around athletic build and intensity are what garnered her a large following in just her freshmen year and a number of honors and awards that followed.

As her new chapter begins, Siegrist enters the draft as Villanova’s all-time leading scorer for both men's and women’s basketball, a two-time Big East Player of the Year, and the all-time leading scorer in Big East Conference history.

Siegrist becomes only the second female player from Villanova to be selected in the draft. The only other Wildcat drafted was Trish Juhline in 2003, who, unlike Maddy, was picked in the third round.

Despite her stellar talent and nationwide fame, Maddy remains a rather family-oriented young adult. Speaking of her Breezy roots, the draftee makes note of numerous summers there.

“I enjoy the tight-knit community down on the peninsula. I’ll always cherish going out and playing with all the kids on the block.”

Maddy Siegrist begins her professional journey in mid-May when the WNBA kick-offs on a new exciting season.

Siegrist’s story and upbringing is overall something that several tall girls from Queens can look up to. She inspires a new generation of New Yorkers who are willing to fulfill the work needed to get to the top.
