The Start of Anthony Volpe

Sofia Sterlacci '25

Anthony Michael Volpe, the small-town New Jersey native made his debut in the majors as a New York Yankee on March 30, 2023 at the young age of twenty one. From very early on in Spring Training, word was beginning to spread that Anthony Volpe was here to stay.

When asked about Volpe’s determination and commitment to earning the spot, Yankees General Manager Cashman said, “we knew IKF could defend it, we knew Peraza could take it and we knew Volpe could rise above them all.” Volpe made a great impression on the team owner and manager, but Aaron Boone also had great confidence in another player.

The team execs decided to make it an open battle between both players during Spring Training and to let their skill and drive determine who would get the position. In the end, Volpe rose to the occasion and demonstrated talent that could not deny him the position as the New York Yankees’ shortstop.

Aside from his glove, Volpe has speed, and Boone says he likes his control of the strike zone when he is at the plate. All in all, Anthony Volpe has fans talking about all the striking reminders of every Yankee fan’s all-time favorite, Derek Jeter.

After all, Volpe and Jeter share many similarities. Both players have ties to New Jersey and grew up as die-hard Yankee fans, both were called up to the majors during their early twenties and both took on the same position.

In the end, Volpe has really big shoes to fill, as well as high expectations to exceed not only from a franchise that is putting a lot of trust in him, but also from the fans who cannot wait to see what he has to offer.
