Wicked: Is It Worth Holding Space For?

Chase Chiong '26

Among all of the Jonathan Bailey edits, “Defying Gravity” covers, and rather large amount of advertisement, the newest movie musical, Wicked, has already soared to the top of the Billboard 200 Charts.

The Broadway musical Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It was adapted into the musical we know of today by Stephen Schwartz, first premiering in 2003, starring Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. Ever since its very first show, Wicked has grown to be loved and appreciated by fans all over the world.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, the movie's visuals bring the world of Oz to life through exceptionally thought-out costumes, special effects, and a breathtaking cast. Every aspect of the film is specially curated to bring this bewitching world to life. The vocals are unlike any other movie musical out there: the clarity and vocal blend amongst all of the characters are absolute perfection.

The movie explores the complex yet enchanting relationship between the characters Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (Cynthia Erivo), and Glinda, the Good Witch (Ariana Grande). It captures the strengths and unspoken vulnerability between the characters, creating an illuminative chemistry between the characters that cannot be ignored.

Since production began filming, this Wicked adaptation starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo has taken the internet by storm. Fans from all over the world have come together to connect through their shared anticipation for the movie musical; whether it shall live up to their expectations or not.

The movie musical adaptation of this well-renowned film truly surpassed all expectations I had for it. Bearing in mind that movie musicals are typically not executed well, Wicked is by far the best movie musical to have ever graced the screens. Regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of the Wicked franchise, I couldn’t recommend this film enough. Wicked is definitely worth holding space for.
