A volleyball season filled with new coaches, new players, and a lot of hard work!

Every week, the JV and Varsity volleyball teams have been grinding and putting in the work to become better athletes and even better teammates. JV practices for 9 hours a week and the Varsity team practices 12 hours a week. The teams started practicing during the second half of August and are now going into the first round of playoffs.

Last season ended on a great note. The team came out on top as Brooklyn/Queens Diocese Champions and City Champions. The team also came out of the season as New York State finalists. Fontbonne volleyball is “intense, entertaining, and fast,” according to Romeo Petric, Fontbonne’s Athletic Director. Once the 2021 volleyball season was over, the team said a bittersweet goodbye to our 12 seniors, as well as our coaches former Coach Alex Moule and former assistant Coach Alana Ball.

Then the question was, who is going to coach? Sami Jindyeh and Fontbonne volleyball alumna Lindsay DeBoer ‘18 stepped up to the plate. Head Coach Sami shared his thoughts on the season and his favorite memory. “The season has been going great and I believe that we are the best team in the league. My favorite memory of the season was seeing all the players’ faces after they finally beat Xaverian High School in the 1st set of the match.” This was coach Sami’s first head coaching job. “The difference between coaching and playing is you can't expect everyone to think how you think.”

Assistant Coach Lindsay, an alumna, felt at home coming back to Fontbonne. “The transition from player to coach made me a better leader and the dynamic is completely different from playing.”

The season consisted of 13 intense, exciting, and tiring games. Sadly, it is now coming to an end. As a player on the team, I believe that this has been the best season yet! The team has a challenge ahead of them, with playoffs starting this week! Make sure to wish us luck!
