The annual Dig Pink Volleyball game, hosted by the club Fontbonne Against Cancer, took place on October 24th. It was a fundraiser to raise money for breast cancer. T-shirts were sold before and during the game, along with bracelets, keychains, and baked goods from our bake sale.
The bake sales took place every lunch period on October 23rd and 24th. Baked goods were $2 each. Students volunteered to sell these goods during their lunch periods, and others brought treats in.
The Dig Pink Volleyball shirts were $20 each, bracelets were $2, keychains were $3, and there was a $2 pink dress down. There was also a raffle for a $50 Starbucks gift card, the winner being freshman Bella Kovacic.
All proceeds went to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
When the game started, students took the lead, but teachers came back strong and ended up winning the first set. Although in the second set, the students redeemed themselves, tying up the game. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to do the tiebreaker, so the game was a draw.
There was a huge turnout for participating students, and the team did rotations so that everyone got a chance to go in at least once. There were some girls from the Fontbonne volleyball team playing, but a lot of the participants didn’t play volleyball with the school. That's the beauty of this game, you don’t need to be a star volleyball player to have a good time.
Freshman Sienna Firingos states, “Even though I didn’t really know how to play it was still super fun.” Another freshman Valentina Quiroga says, “It was really fun! I enjoyed playing even though I didn’t play very long.”
The president of Fonbonne Against Cancer, senior Laura Meoli says, “I think the event was a huge success, and I am so grateful our student body and faculty made it possible! from making T-shirts to selling keychains, every contribution made a difference. The game was a lot of fun, especially to be playing against teachers we have in the classroom. Sadly, it ended in a draw, but I definitely feel the students won!”
Math teacher, and participant of the game, Ms. Duggan stated, “It was fun, the teachers won the first game, but we all got tired so students won the second part.”
Overall we were very successful with our fundraiser, raising $3,000 and the support from all students.
